Madonna meets Uma. 5th anniversary of the Cultural Quarters

16 October 2015 – 31 January 2016

For five years now, the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum and the Museum Schnütgen have been direct neighbours in the cultural quarters at Neumarkt. On this occasion, the two museums will present a joint project.

In the exhibition "Madonna meets Uma" objects from non-European cultures (Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum) will be juxtaposed with works from medieval Europe (Museum Schnütgen). These juxtapositions lead to some extraordinary results and will be presented in the permanent collections of both museums. A brochure, published specially for this occasion, reveals the stories behind the exhibits.

In addition, there will be public guided tours of both museums on a regular basis. These tours by research staff of both museums or by staff of the Museumsdienst (Museum Service) will provide an opportunity to discuss and compare topics such as skull trophies, divine incense, the primordial mother, dealing with death and more in different cultures.
