Together at last. The Relief of the Magi at the Museum Schnütgen in Cologne, Germany

The occasion of the exhibition "Arnt the sculptor of images – Master of animated sculptures" (25.6.-20.9.2020) is a rediscovery. In early 2019, the Museum Schnütgen succeeded in acquiring three previously lost fragments, with which a masterpiece by Master Arnt, a panel from an altarpiece with the Adoration of the Magi, can be completed and as such be shown for the first time. The video explains why placing the new fragments flush with the relief is more complex than expected.

The mysterious rock crystal reliquary on lion feet

On display in "Magic Rock Crystal" until March 19, 2023

What an unusual piece! It will play an important role in the special exhibition "Magic Rock Crystal" (November 25, 2022, to March 19, 2023) at the Museum Schnütgen. It is magnificent, made of gilded copper, colorful stones, and, above all, a huge, transparent cylinder. Although it may look like glass, it is not made of glass, but of rock crystal, a precious material that was considered magical in the Middle Ages.

Trailer for the exhibition "By Women's Hands: Medieval Manuscripts from Cologne Collections"

Exhibition at the Museum Schnütgen from October 26, 2021, to January 30, 2022

The artistically designed book, handwritten in the Middle Ages, continues to exert a strong fascination to this day. Their production was not solely a male pursuit, but was often also in the hands of women. In cooperation with the Archdiocesan and Cathedral Library of Cologne (EDDB), the Museum Schnütgen is exhibiting a selection of manuscripts that were created by nuns in northern France, Cologne, Lower Saxony, and Nuremberg.
